THE BAUER TYPE Printed by the New York office of the German-based Bauer Type Foundry, this specimen book serves as a tool for specing type, and as a catalog for the foundry. Like many spec books, there aren't page numbers (only numbers within separate sections), and there is no date of publication. As best I can tell, the book was printed sometime between 1937 and 1943. This is based on the fact that Legend (designed by F. H. Ernst Schneidler) was introduced in 1937, and a date of 1943 was written in pen on the inside cover. I don't know what the situation was with Bauer during the war. If someone knows the details of how the New York operation fared, maybe they can drop me a note. From what I understand, the current iteration of Bauer is now in operation in Barcelona. |

This second edition of the Bauer catalog is more than a
mere type specimen book. It is in a very true sense a gallery of
modern art -- a collection of the handiwork of the greatest designers of
Europe and America. It is a pre-view of what the best and smartest
advertisements will wear for seasons to come. THE BAUER TYPE FOUNDRY |
