Bauer Type Foundry

THE BAUER TYPE
FOUNDRY INC.
NEW YORK

Printed by the New York office of the German-based Bauer Type Foundry, this specimen book serves as a tool for specing type, and as a catalog for the foundry.

Like many spec books, there aren't page numbers (only numbers within separate sections), and there is no date of publication.  As best I can tell, the book was printed sometime between 1937 and 1943.  This is based on the fact that Legend (designed by F. H. Ernst Schneidler) was introduced in 1937, and a date of 1943 was written in pen on the inside cover.

I don't know what the situation was with Bauer during the war.  If someone knows the details of how the New York operation fared, maybe they can drop me a note.  From what I understand, the current iteration of Bauer is now in operation in Barcelona.

FORWARD

This second edition of the Bauer catalog is more than a mere type specimen book.  It is in a very true sense a gallery of modern art -- a collection of the handiwork of the greatest designers of Europe and America.  It is a pre-view of what the best and smartest advertisements will wear for seasons to come.
Here are paraded all the favorite Bauer Type faces, and the latest designs -- Futura, Beton, Trafton Script, Corvinus, Gillies Gothic, Cartoon, Legend, Bauer Text and Lilith.  Types that have played -- and continue to play -- a leading part in the transformation that is taking place in American typography today.
Bauer types have always been conceived and created primarily for advertising use.  That they have been eagerly seized upon by book publishers and fine printers in ever field is but an added tribute to their unusual excellence.
To achieve types of supreme distinction we have sought out the finest living craftsmen, wherever they may be found -- and have secured their best designs.  This is half the secret of the success of Bauer types.
The rest of it is a matter of the meticulous care and skill, born of generations of tradition and experience, with which we translate their designs into type metal.  The happy results may be seen here upon every page.
Between these covers you will find visual delights and inspiration -- and all the typographic ingredients you will ever need to create handsome advertisements of endless variety.
